I was reading in Psalms today, and I was reminded that God has a time for everything. God’s timing looks nothing like ours. We are like a “microwave society” wanting everything a few seconds ago. Have you ever stood by your microwave waiting for something to cook, and 30 seconds seemed like an hour? We pray, and expect immediate answers, and get frustrated, and fearful if it doesn’t happen right then. We forget that God’s timing is perfect, and He never shows up too soon or too late. God does not measure time as we do.
I think it is safe to say that most Christian’s if not all have been praying about this COVID-19 pandemic, and the upcoming election, and race riots, etc. Each of us wants to see a move of God; almost forcing him to bring an end to it, and feeling frustrated because he has not. It seems that evil is winning, and God is silent, and still. But scripture is clear in telling us that God does things His way, and in His time. Things get done when He says, and not a moment sooner. God is not given to panic as we are.
Let’s read Psalm 75
“We give thanks to you, O God, we give thanks, for your Name is near; men tell of your wonderful deeds. 2 You say, “I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge uprightly. 3 When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm. 4 To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns. 5 Do not lift your horns against heaven; do not speak with outstretched neck.’ “
6 No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt a man. 7 But it is God who judges; He brings down, he exalts another. 8 In the hand of the Lord is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs. 9 As for me, I will declare this forever; I will sing praise to the God of Jacob. 10 I will cut off the horns of all the wicked, but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”
We as His children have difficulty grasping God’s timing. Just as our children have done when told that they have to wait for something they are so excited about. Waiting seems like torture to them. We who have children have all experienced at least one instance of a child’s tantrum over not getting something they wanted immediately. Telling them “it’s not time yet,” does nothing to help, often it just makes the fit louder. We as humans have a hard time understanding why God seems to take His time. When we pray for someone’s healing, and they seem to get worse before they get better, we need to be careful that we do not get bitter!
Think about Lazarus (John 11:1-44) God was not too late, He already knew that Lazarus was going to die and that He would raise him to life again. It was not for Him that it was done, it was for those who were watching, and for us all these years later. God is never too late! He is God, and nothing is too hard for him! Death does not scare him or stop him.
As we look around our world today, we can rest assured that our Sovereign God is still very much in control. If evil seems to be winning at the moment, just sit back and watch to see what God can and will do. And remember if God was still not covering us with His hand of protection none of us could handle what would be unleashed.
There is wisdom in God’s timing, there is purpose in it. We as His children must trust that our Father knows what is best, and when all things should occur. God will give us what we need when we need it, not a moment too soon.
Like you, I want to see the chaos of this world quieted. I want to see evil banished and good rise up, but I have to remember to pray and seek God; to read His Word, and understand that God’s ways are best, His timing is perfect, and I can rest in His goodness, and grace.
Nothing will come near my door unless God allows it, and if He allows it, He will give me the grace and peace I need to go through it. None of us likes to suffer, none of us likes to wait. We want that instant gratification, but all too often it is very dangerous to have. If we are never told to wait then we would never grow the way we need to in our relationship with the Lord.
I encourage you today to get your Bible out, sit down prayerfully, and read God’s word. Let his word fill up the ‘hurried’ places of your heart; let His word feed your weary soul, and calm your heightened senses. Stop looking at all that is going on through a lens of fear, and start seeing it through, Jesus.
One day all the evil in this world will be gone. Jesus will rule and reign, and all the hurried, anxious fear will be gone. Just know that He can take it away now if we will only release it into His hands. Then the “Peace that passes understanding,” can rule in our hearts and minds.
He sees the evil, He is allowing it. He sees the pandemic, He is allowing it. Why? He knows and that is enough!
